Extract of Letter from Revd Samuel Marsden to
J. Poynder Esq. Dated Parramatta
June 25th 1813.
This I trust in a short time will open a large field for Missionary exertions. Nothing can be done effectually without a vessel to keep up a regular communication with the Island. This difficulty I hope to overcome in time. I am very sorry that I did not form some plan in England when I was there with a few pious friends, to send out a Vessel for the purpose. Time will open the way and all we can do is to wait patiently and watch the first opportunity to do good. We are improving in our Society here— The Inhabitants are becoming more and more orderly, and moral, and as the young men and women grow up, they are not so corrupted as their Parents. We may expect a better generation than those sent from Europe. Some of these become pious, and remember their God in this Land of their captivity. From the Children born of European parents I expect Missionaries will be raised up for the Instruction of the Natives in the South Sea Islands. They will not feel those difficulties that Persons in England generally do to engage in such work— They will be near their friends and native land, which has a natural tendency to reconcile the human mind to bear more hardships than at a great distance from both.
